Etymology McIntosh (1897) introduced Gattyana to replace Nychia, which was a homonym, and he explained the etymology in his 1900 monograph, p.285. The genus is named for Charles Henry Gatty FRSE, FLS, FGS, who funded the establishment of the Gatty Marine Laboratory, St Andrews, Scotland. [details]
Grammatical gender Feminine. The type is Aphrodita cirrhosa, a feminine combination, and McIntosh (1897) did not change the suffix when he created Gattyana, despite the genus being named after Gatty, a male person. Subsequent adjectival names have also have feminine suffixes and there are no obvious male suffixes. [details]
