Description Diakonov, Op. cit., has found some specimens differing from the typical form in having "very elongated spines, a normal dark colour of test and spines, a rather reduced number of tubercles, and a wider apical system" also "the arrangement of the ambulacral pores is not so oblique as in typical intermedius". He distinguishes this form as f. longispina; but there are intermediate specimens. It appears thus that Str. intermedius is subject to the same variations as drobachiensis, and it would appear that the so called typical form, with the short, robust spines, is just the littoral form, corresponding to the short-spined form of drobachiensis usually found on rocky coasts.
