Heterocentrotus mamillatus (aboral)
Heterocentrotus mamillatus (aboral)
Description Close-up of the upper side: The secondary spines are very short and distally thickened and truncated. The uppermost ambulacral primary spines have the same shape, and the apical disc is also densely covered by these short spines. They serve to protect the test against heavy wave-surge, offering little resistance to the water currents.
