Ecology Infaunal detritivore lying horizontally in the top 5cm of sediment and possibly indicating the halocline (Olsson, 1976; see also Ellison and Murray, 1987); always subtidal; only recently introduced into the Baltic (Lutze, 1965); transitional water layer, in the lower part or just below the Zostera belt (Alve and Murray, 1999); reproduces at temperatures less than 8 °C, the most important control on its distribution (Wefer, 1976b).
