Authority It seems reasonable to attribute order Sabellida to Levinsen (1883) although the name he used was 'Sabelliformia". His 'Sabelliformia' was adopted by Benham (1894, 1896). A number of authors have examined the relationship of Serpulidae and Sabellidae placed together in an order-level relationship, sometimes together with Sabellariidae and others. Serpulimorpha has also been used as the grouping name, notably by Hatschek (1893). However, according to Fauchald & Rouse (1997: 135), Levinsen (1883: 180) appears to be the first to have an order-level name based on the family name Sabellidae. This precedes Hatschek. Levinsen used the suffix -formia for his Sabelliformia, similar to the '-formes' still used in vertebrates today, whereas much later Dales (1962, 1963: appendix) used the now traditional invertebrate order -ida suffix, as the familiar 'Sabellida'.
