Editor's comment Includes former Questidae. Past Orbiniidae subfamilies, other than the de facto nominal subfamily Orbiniinae, appear to be of questionable utility and may require re-validation. However, Blake (2017) maintained use of Microrbiniinae Blake, 2000 for Orbiniella and Proscoloplos (and also it must include the type genus Microrbinia Hartman). It is unclear as yet if Methanoariciinae (for Methanoaricia Blake, 2000) is a required subfamily. [details]
Nomenclature Hartman (1942:57) replaced Ariciidae with Orbiniidae with this comment: "The name ORBINIIDAE is used in place of Ariciidae since the type genus of the family, Aricia Savigny, 1820, is preoccupied. The next available name is Orbinia Quatrefages, 1865." This replacement is in accord with the current Code article 39, namely that "The name of a family-group taxon is invalid if the name of its type genus is a junior homonym or has been totally or partially suppressed" [details]
description Orbiniida with lateral parapodia in a thoracic region and, usually, dorsal parapodia in an abdominal region. Prostomium without appendages, one or two asetigerous segments present anteriorly; no peristomial appendages. A saclike proboscis present. All setae simple, including capillaries, simple hooks and sometimes brush-topped, bifid or furcate setae. [details]
