In order to trace the evolution of paleoenvironments within deltaic zones under an equatorial climate, present-day ecosystem tracers have been defined, namely biological tracers, benthic foraminifera and ostracods. We thus obtained information with regards to salinity (mainly with the help of foraminifera); and carbonate equilibrium at the water/sediment interfaces and thereby the intensity to which bottom organic matter degraded; information was also obtained on the mixing of continental and marine waters as well as on the positioning of environments with respect to nlets (mainly with the use of ostracods). In the first 200 m of a core drilled along a length of 650 m, these biomarkers clearly show four transgressive marine sequences since 125,000 yr B.P. (becoming more intense towards the top). They also show the sharp asymmetry existing in a transgression/progradation cycle. Finally, their importance in the impact of the deltaic plain's size is indicated. All these characteristics contribute to the understanding of the evolutionary trend of such a system with respect to changes in parameters controlling the environment.
