Lower and middle? Cretaceous Ostracoda from the Atlantic Ocean off Guiana and off West Africa
A fauna of 28 species of Lower and Middle? Cretaceous Ostracoda has been obtained from two core holes of the Deep Sea Drilling Program in the Atlantic Ocean. Four of the species are described as new; four are referred to previously described Lower Cretaceous species; and 20 are given affinitive assignments or are left in open nomenclature because of scarcity or poor preservation. The new species are: Cytherelloidea bertelsae, n. sp., Hemicytherura? nealei, n. sp., Majungaella? minuta, n. sp., and Veenia (Veenia) guianensis, n. sp. The available data suggest that the ostracode-bearing strata at both sites are of Albian (late Lower Cretaceous) to early Cenomanian? (middle Cretaceous) age. Several of the species are of pre-Albian affinity, but it is uncertain whether these are relict forms in the deep sea realm or were derived from older rocks.
