Mesodinium rubrum, a photosynthetic ciliate
Description This ciliate is Mesodinium rubrum, a very common planktonic ciliate which usually relies on photosynthesis rather than eating phytoplankton. It contains chloroplasts from cryptophyte algae. It is about 30 microns long.
