Etymology The species is named after the ï¬ctional deity Hydra (also known as Mother Hydra), created by the American writer of cosmic horror ï¬ction H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) and ï¬rstly introduced in the short story “The Shadow over Innsmouth,†published in 1936. In the pantheon of Lovecraftian cosmic entities, Mother Hydra is the consort of Father Dagon. [details]
