Taxonomy Michaelsen (1919: 152) introduced the term Clitellata as a class rank (for oligochaete and leech orders) in an upper-level classification of the Annelids in which he also included an order rank for polychaetes (in class Chaetopoda) and a class rank for echiurans and Sipunculans, all members of phylum Annelida currently. Here is his classification:

Kreis Annelides

I. Klasse Archiannelides,

II. Klasse Chaetopoda,

1. Ordnung Protochaeta,

2. Ordnung Polychaeta.

III. Klasse Clitellata.

1. Ordnung Oligochaeta.

2. Ordnung Hirudinea.

IV. Klasse Echiuroidea,

V. Klasse Sipunculoidea

Klasse Clitellata: Anneliden mit wohl ausgebildeter äußerer und innerer Metamerie, ohne Parapodien und ohne Fühler, Fühler-cirren und cirren, meist auch ohne Kiemen. Geschlechtsapparat zwittrig. Gonaden in einer kleineren Zahl bestimmter Segmente. Ein Clitellum vorhanden. Die Entwicklung ist direkt. Meist Süßwasser und Landtiere.
