Etymology The species is named after the fictional deity Hydra (also known as Mother Hydra), created by the American writer of cosmic horror fiction H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) and firstly introduced in the short story “The Shadow over Innsmouth,” published in 1936. In the pantheon of Lovecraftian cosmic entities, Mother Hydra is the consort of Father Dagon. [details]
