Etymology Not stated. However, Asychis is the name in Greek of a male Egyptian pharaoh, as mentioned by Herodotus. Therefore Asychis is a masculine name, as indicated by the type species epithet of 'atlanticus' used by Kinberg [details]
Grammatical gender Masculine. Asychis is a Greek male name. [details]
Homonymy Asychis Kinberg, 1867 is senior homonym to Asychis Gray, 1867 in Porifera (Phylum), Demospongiae (Class), Heteroscleromorpha (Subclass), Haplosclerida (Order) Chalinidae (Family). Although the accepted year date is 1867 for both, Kinberg's article is in the 1866 issue of the journal, and has a late 1866 date on the title page, as does the following article, whereas Gray's article is dated May 1867 (fide R van Soest). Evaluating the dates conservatively, Kinberg's article was likely published very early in 1867 at the latest and thus was likely to be before Gray's. Asychis Gray, 1867 is currently a junior synonym to Haliclona (Gellius) Gray, 1867 of the same work, but as a junior homonym is no longer an available name. [details]
Remark Asychis is also long in use as a species epithet in Hesperiidae butterflies, Chiomara asychis (Stoll), 1780 (formerly Achlyodes). Searches for Asychis in BHL etc, will include these. [details]
