Taxonomy This was intended as a replacement name for Hymedesmia pennata Brøndsted, 1932 which was considered a Clathria (Microciona) by Hooper (1996, based on De Laubenfels' (1936) transfer of Brondsted's species to Anaata. Anaata is indeed a junior synonym of Clathria (Microciona), but De Laubenfels made a mistake in assigning H. pennata to Anaata. Since the combination Clathria pennata was already occupied by Clathria pennata (Lambe, 1895 as Desmacella), Hooper proposed C. (M.) brondstedi. Hymedesmia pennata is a valid species of Hymedesmia, and thus Hooper's new name is now a junior synonym of it. [details]
