Taxonomy Spongia pennatula Lamarck is a Caulospongia (see E. Topsent, 1932). Ridley misinterpreted Lamarck's species and assigned it to Carteriospongia (as Carterispongia). This was adopted by Lendenfeld (1889: 193) and Bergquist (1980: 456), as Phyllospongia or Carteriospongia. For the time being we assign Ridley 's specimens of Carteriospongia pennatula to his authorship, but technically, this species needs a new name. [details]
