Spelling The spelling chosen by Kinberg was "magalaensis" which is a rare spelling amongst geographic species names derived from the Strait of Magellan, named for the explorer Magellan. In Portuguese Magellan was Fernão de Magalhães. Names such as 'magellanica' are common, but 'magellensis' is also an uncommon variant [details]
Type locality Straits of Magellan. Kinberg (1866: 241) wrote: "Fretum Magalhaense juxta insulam Büket fundo 2 — 4 oigyiarum" [Strait of Magellan near the island of Büket, 4-8 m (?)] The ancient Greek measure known as the orguia might have been 2 m, somewhat longer than a fathom.
