This SUPPLEMENT is intended to update the CATALOGUE OF THE POLYCHAETOUS ANNELIDS OF THE WORLD (Hartman, 1959). New systematic categories have greatly increased in the past five years; they include five new family names, more than 100 generic or subgeneric names, and about 1000 specific or subspecific names. The number of new combinations or indicated revisions is also considerable. One hundred fifty-one bibliographic citations containing original names or new combinations have been added.
The SUPPLEMENT consists of three parts: (1) new family, generic and specific names, with bibliographic citations, together with new combinations or synonyms not previously indicated; (2) new literature citations and earlier ones not included in the CATALOGUE. 1959: 615-628, or in Hartman, LITERATURE OF THE POLYCHAETOUS ANNELIDS, 1951 (priv. prtd.) ; (3) an index to all specific and subspecific names listed in the CATALOGUE and the SUPPLEMENT.
Page references in the first part of the SUPPLEMENT are to the CATALOGUE, and the same format is followed. Family names in systematic arrangement are followed by new generic names, and these by new specific names, in alphabetic arrangement. Most of the bibliographic citations are to references listed in the second part of the SUPPLEMENT, but some are to references in the LITERATURE, 1951, and the CATALOGUE, 1959.
