Publication date De Weerdt (1986) for unexplained reasons cites 1835, later 1836 as years of publication of this genus. This was followed by most subsequent authors, because De Weerdt gave an extensive taxonomic history of members of the Haplosclerida. However, in the 1836 publication she cited as the source for the name Haliclona (Grant's contributions to the Cyclopedia of Anatomy and Physiology, ed. R.B. Todd), this name is not found. The only sponge name used by Grant there is Halina papillaris (a synonym of Halichondria panicea). [details]
