Taxonomy The assignment of Hircinia variabilis Schmidt as type species of the genus Ircinia is controversial. It is proposed by Pronzato et al. (2004) to name Ircinia spongiastrum Nardo, 1833 as type species. This is a nomen nudum and as such not available as a name for a valid (type) species. Subsequently these authors assign I. spongiastrum to the synonymy of Hircinia variabilis Schmidt, 1862 by which act this would become the type species of Ircinia. Previously, authors have attempted to assign Spongia fasciculata Pallas, 1766, as type of Ircinia, but that is not possible because this was not among the species mentioned by Nardo, 1833 under Ircinia. For Hircinia variabilis Schmidt to become type species 'officially', a verdict from the Committee of the ICZN appears necessary. [details]
