page(s): Plate 7; note: according to [Lightfoot] 1786 this work contains a figure of Serpula attrahens on plate VII fig 15. However, that figure is a fissurellid limpet, and not a watering-pot shell [details]  OpenAccess publication

Authority The authorship is anonymous, hence the square brackets around the author name indicating an authorship inferred by external evidence (ICZN ICZN Recommendation 51D, and see the note under the source record for Lightfoot (1786), who was the librarian of the collection owner (the Duchess of Portland). Other possible authors were Solander and Humphries. The plate VII fig 15 in the reference to Humphries Conchology (apparently actually by Da Costa 1770-71) apparently of Serpula attrahens is of a keyhole limpet, Fissurellidae, and not a watering pot shell (Penicillidae) [details]

Editor's comment Not a Serpula but the tube of a watering-pot shell (bivalve in Penicillidae) from Madagascar. The original description is minimal and is part of an auction catalogue as follows: "2331 Serpula attrahens or furbelowed Watering-pot. Humphrey's Conch. pl, VII, fig,15, from Madagascar — very rare. Humphrey's Conchology is actually an anonymous work, most likely authored by Da Costa, and Da Costa is given the authorship in the WoRMS source. Plate VII fig 15 in the reference to Humphries Conchology apparently of Serpula attrahens is of a keyhole limpet, Fissurellidae, and not a watering pot shell (Penicillidae). This must be a mistake. Da costa 1771 does not illustrate a watering-pot shell on that plate. Rehder (1967) corrects the attribution to plate XII figure 15 which appears to be a watering-pot shell (figure 14 on the same plate is also a watering-pot shell, probably the better known Serpula penis Linnaeus) [details]
