Status Mortensen (1951: p. 261) favoured the name Abatus elongatus over A. koehleri, arguing that Thiéry's replacement name for the junior homonym Hemiaster elongatus Koehler (preoccupied by another echinoid, the fossil Hemiaster elongatus of Duncan & Sladen) was unnecessary since this form is not a Hemiaster anyway. According to the Code, however, "the junior name [of a primary homonym] is permanently invalid" (ICZN 1999 Art. 57.2). The correct name to be used is thus Thiéry's replacement name. [details]
