Description This is a solitary mussid, about 5 cm broad and tall. The distinctive features are the very large primary septa which flare in a large lobe, and in the living coral, the partially transparent fleshy lobes through which the septa can be seen. (Sheppard, 1998 <308>)
Corals are monocentric (oval or circular), cylindrical, with base for attachment or with a pointed base, free-living. Primary septa are thick and have very large teeth. Paliform lobes are usually well developed. Columellae are broad and compact. Polyps are extended only at night. They are translucent so that the toothed primary septa are seen clearly within lobes of the polyp wall. Colour: various mixtures of almost all colours. Abundance: seldom common but always conspicuous. (Veron, 1986 <57>) [details]
