Type species Quatrefages (1866: 421) is either unaware of, or ignoring Bispira Krøyer, 1856, when he creates Distylia for 5 species, one of which is new. Amphitrite volutacornis Montagu, 1804, as Distylia volutacornis is the first species of the 5 mentioned, and later Bush (1905: 192), after some earlier discussion (p.183) including comment on confusion over Bispira, 'restores' genus Distylia for Amphitrite volutacornis Montagu, 1804, and formally names that species as the type species of Distylia.
