Type locality Off Apaiang Island (today = Abaiang) (location unstated further, no station number given by Chamberlin, but he gives a date of 3 January 1900) , Gilbert Islands, Kiribati. Precise geolocation unknown, but 2°N 173° E is very close to Abaiang Atoll. However Conde-Vela et al (2018: 6) state the location as "Sta. H3964 (25°49'43"N, 171°43'37"W)", with the station number probably from the USNM museum record 19388 which gives this station (but gives no geolocation). However, this geolocation (derivation unstated) is mismatched, as it is offset from Abaiang by 23 degrees of latitude, and at least 15 degrees of longitude. It denotes a Hawaiian chain geolocation. Whereas in the Fish Commission station list for Records of the Albatross, the true location of sounding station 3964 is off Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, as expected, and a Apaiang Atoll record for the next sounding is followed by a sounding station 3966 at 1 deg 52 minutes N, 173 deg 15 minutes E. This sounding, taken the next day, must be very close to the expected type locality off Apaiang Atoll [G Read 27 Feb 2018] [details]

Specimen Smithsonian Institution, Washington (type USNM 19388, paratypes 19386). Chamberlin records epitokes "about 12 specimens" collected at surface by electric light. He does not indicate a holotype in the description, but noted that one specimen was dissected as basis of the description. Perhaps Chamberlin had separated this specimen as the lot now treated as holotype.  [details]
