Taxonomy Serpula proboscidea generally has been attributed to Gmelin (1791: 3745), and was regarded to be indeterminable by Hartman (1959: 597); however, according to Mörch (1863: 383) the basis of the description is in an old work of Fabricius (1610), and in Baster (1760 pl. 9 fig.3). The first available binomen is Amphitrite proboscidea Bruguière, 1789: 59. Baster's figure (under Serpula triquetra) most probably depicts Serpula vermicularis (contra Mörch, who assigns it to Hydroides norvegicus), as first mentioned by McIntosh (1923: 355), and which has been followed here.
