Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet decipiens is the present participle of the Latin verb decipio, meaning 'cheating' or 'misleading', and refers presumably to the fact that the species described by Gravier had been previously stated to reproduce by budding (Vaillant, 1865). In fact, the presumed buds were the tentacles: "Les prétendus bourgeons de cette Annélide, dont M. L. Vaillant n'a examiné qu'un tronçon réduit aux 8 premiers segments sétigères, ne sont autres que les tentacules qui présentent la même physionomie que chez les autres formes du même groupe" (Gravier, 1905: 441). Other authors had pointed this possibility earlier: "As stated in 1868, Vaillant's supposed new instance of reproduction by budding is due to a misapprehension. The so-called buds appear to be tentacles (furnished with pigment-spots at the tip) of a Polycirrus or closely allied form" (McIntosh, 1885: 204). For a full comment check Gravier (1906).

Taxonomy Fauvel (1919: 460) considered Anisocirrus decipiens Gravier, 1905 as a possible junior synonym of Polycirrus coccineus (Grube, 1870), stating that "Quant à l'espèce décrite par Gravier, elle se distinguerait [from P. coccineus] uniquement par ses uncini différents, s'il n'y a pas eu confusion, toutefois, car les spécimens qui m'ont été communiqués [of A. decipiens] avaient des plaques onciales telles que je les ai décrites ci-dessus." Hartman (1959: 499) accepted this synonymy, while Glasby & Huchings (2014: 41) considered both species as valid, stating that "the two species have different uncini: A. decipiens has Type 1 uncini with teeth arranged in a single vertical series, whereas P. coccineus has Type 2 uncini arranged in a double transverse series."
