Taxonomy Ranked as family within superfamily Mytiloidea by Morton (2015) based on some anatomical characters. However, in this paper the type species of Musculus viz. Musculus discors (Linnaeus, 1767) is classified in the Modiolidae, also ranked as family. Taking into account this inconsistency and the lack of a consesus on the phylogeny of the Mytiloidea, a single family Mytilidae is here retained.  [details]
