Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet otakouica seems to be composed by the toponym 'Otakou' followed by the Latin suffix -ica, feminine of -icus and added to a noun to form an adjective meaning 'belonging to'. 'Otakou', named 'Otago' previously to the standardisation of Maori spelling in the 1840s, was an important Maori settlement in the eastern side of Otago Peninsula, and is still a fishing village at about 25 km from Dunedin, near the mouth of Otago Harbor. The prestandardised form 'Otago' was adopted by the first European settlers for the surrounding area, extending subsequently to the whole province, and is commonly mistaken as a European corruption of 'Otakou'. This way, otakouica would mean 'from the Otago region' or 'inhabiting the Otago region'. [details]
