Taxonomy Savigny bases his new combination on Amphitrite ventilabrum Gmelin, 1791, also including the pre-linnean name of Corralina tubularia melitensis of Ellis, 1755, and citing the Amphitrite ventilabrum usage in Lamarck (as "Lam. Hist. des anim, sans vertèbr, tom V, pag. 356 , n.° 1."). Quatrefages (1866:554) gives a synonymy (similar to that of Savigny, 1822), and a description and remarks. The Hartman catalogue p565 gives a checklist listing as Sabella ventilabrum Savigny, 1818 in Quatrefages, which formula indicates Hartman did not have the work of Savigny on hand at the time she recorded the name from the presence in Quatrefages. The authority given by Hartman is wrong as it is a recombination and should be Gmelin (original name as Amphitrite ventilabrum) [details]

Editor's comment This name usage by Savigny is notable for the citation of the Amphitrite ventilabrum usage in Lamarck (as "Lam. Hist. des anim, sans vertèbr, tom V, pag. 356 , n.° 1."). This is because it is generally believed that Lamarck ruthlessly copied from Savigny mss, but here it is clear that Lamarck's publication precedes Savigny's. Also Lamarck treats Sabella differently, by including it within Amphitrite as a synonym. There are no possible 'Savigny in Lamarck' usages for new Sabella taxa as Lamarck did not regard the genus as distinct. [details]
