Taxonomy Costa (1862) created Polynoe tessellata, and in the same paper he named [new genus] Monocolea as the genus it should belong in. He wrote "“Osservazioni. La condizione dell'unica elitra cefalica allontana questa Polinoè da tutte le altre finora conosciute , nelle quali le elitre sono tutte appajate : per la qual cosa non sarà forsi male a proposito formare in detto genere due distinti gruppi o sotto-generi, de' quali I'uno Polynoè s. s. abbraccerebbe le specie ad elitre tutte appajate; l'altro Monocolea (nob.) abbraccerebbe quelle ad elitra cefalica unica.” [Remarks. The presence of a single cephalic elytron separates this Polinoe [sic] from all the others known so far, in which the elytra are all paired: for this reason it would be advisable to form in this genus two distinct groups or sub-genera, of which the Polynoè s. s. would include the species with all elytra paired; the other Monocolea (nob.) would include those with a unique cephalic elytron. "].
In a subsequent 1867 publication he refers to his previous article, stating that he had proposed the erection of a new genus (instead of subgenus) for the species (“Polinoe tessellata una specie, per la quale proponemmo nel tempo stesso costituirsi un genere distinto col nome di Monocolea”), and also states that he was thinking in making a more detailed description later on, but that the publication of Quatrefages’ work, who had overlooked his taxa, led him to provide the figures of the species sooner than he was planning to. Synonymy Claparède (1868) wrote: "Such an implausible conformation would have deserved special study ... I can not help but believe a mistake" and he placed Polynoe tessellata (the original name) as Polynoe lunulata, See Polynoe tessellata for the full comment. An alternative explanation is an abnormal fusion, but this seems unlikely. [details]
