Etymology Leidy states the genus is named for the Indian name of the Schuylkill River, Philadelphia. Wikipedia is equivocal on whether this is true, giving another Indian name for it, but does indicate Manayunk was certainly an old name for the river. [details]Grammatical gender Leidy (1859) appears to give a feminine suffix to Manayunkia and to his species M. speciosa. The genus name is placed as feminine on that basis plus with the agreement of subsequent authors who created several later names having feminine species-group suffixes. [details]
Publication date Manayunkia speciosa, a new genus and species, was named in a meeting report of Leidy's verbal contribution in April 1858, the report presumed not printed until 1859. In the second meeting report description (Leidy, January 1859, printed 1860:2]) provided more details, and finally twenty four years later in 1883 Leidy provided a full description. [details]
Spelling Later Annenkova (1929) in German text used the incorrect spelling "Manajunkia". As this may be a transliteration decision by the journal editor (although the text is in German the journal is Russian) it is ignored in WoRMS at present. No other example usages have been found. If other examples are found to exist an entry will be given for this spelling. As an accidental misspelling Manajunkia does not have an authorship of Annenkova. It is just a lapsus. [details]
