Distribution Virginian, southside of Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras. Wells (1962) has a comprehensive list of localities from the W. Atlantic on the east coast of North America and in the Caribbean. Wells' reports from further away are more doubtfully likely to modern workers but nevertheless he recorded A. cristata from distant oceans at Pacific California, at Indian Ocean W Australia, and even at Naples in the Mediterranean. [details]
