Type locality Southern Chilika [was Chilka] Lake, Odisha State, India. Approximate geolocation 19.620, 85.178. Southern (1921) had specimens from 15 stations but he did not single out one location, and mentions the size of only 4 specimens. He wrote "This species was found at 15 stations, all south of a line drawn from Nalbano to Patsahanipur. Twice it was found in November, and on thirteen occasions in January to March. In this part of the lake, however, the season makes little difference in the specific gravity of the water, which ranged at the various stations from 1.002-1.011. The habitat of this species varies widely. It was often found in sponges, both Spongilla and Laxosuberites. It also lives under stones on the shore, amongst algae on the rocks, and in sand above and below high-water mark.  [details]

Syntype ZSI ZEV6281/7, geounit Chilka Lake [details]

Lectotype Villalobos-Guerrero et al (2021) attempt to designate a lectotype for Nereis chilkaensis (now in Neanthes) from a single specimen registered as NHMUK 1938.5.7.27. This designation in favour of a specimen not held in India, the country of origin, may be of no consequence as the species is well-characterized in the original description, but the connection to the original material is not explained by the designators. While it is reasonable to think the specimen is a N. chilkaensis, the authors do not provide evidence that this specimen could be part of Southern's original material. It evidently came from a donation from the Indian Museum in 1938, nearly twenty years after Southern published, and in the Natural History Museum it has become labelled as a 'syntype'. However, there is no evidence given that it is a syntype. To the contrary the authors state that the specimen "does not match the size and number of chaetigers stated originally for those specimens" [described by Southern] .Whereas the Indian Museum has a specimen lot for Nereis chilkaensis labelled as 'type', registration numbers ZSI0000004205 and ZEV6281/7 for two specimens of Nereis chilkaensis, and Villalobos-Guerrero et al state that one of those specimens matches Southern's original description.
