Taxonomic remark Luther (1948) describes one specimen he received from Westblad labeled as P. cochlear., of which he says "that it is probably correct". Later, Den Hartog (1966) discusses this description, recognizes it as a separate species, and describes this specimen as Proxenetes lutheri. This act, in turn, was critized by Ax (1971) who rightfully states that the validity of P. lutheri is highly doubtful, as Luther (1948) himself already states that the specimen studied by him resembles P. karlingi so much that it could be argued that both are identical. According to Ax, P. lutheri is probably synonymous with P. karlingi. [details]
