Classification Monogeneric subfamily erected for Sthenelanella Moore, 1910 (six valid species). Gonzalez et al (2018) reported that Sthenelanella had an "unstable position throughout [their analyses, but] corresponded to an independent and highly divergent lineage, potentially representing one of the earliest splits of Sigalionidae. Based on these results, we erected Sthenelanelinae for all members of Sthenelanella." In an unpublished thesis Aungtonya (2004) had proposed this subfamily earlier.Tilic et al (2021:11 of 12) and Struck et al (2005: 246) report different molecular sequences for Sthenelanella uniformis, but it is not yet clear what has caused this mismatch. The view of Tilic et al is that they have not misidentified their specimen, and a further "phylogenetic analysis of Sigalionidae is still warranted in order to resolve the position of Sthenelanella within the group" [details]
Type designation Gonzalez et al (2008: 245) report the type taxon as "Type taxon: Sthenelanella uniformis Moore, 1910", but this is incorrect. The type taxon of a family-level name is a genus, thus it is Stenelanella genus. [details]
