Editor's comment The combination Ophelina pallida (Hartman, 1960) does not appear to be supported by prior taxonomic reports, although anecdotally it is used as valid in the Californian region for benthos reports, and appears in Scamit (Southern California Association of Marine Invertebrate Taxonomists) listings. Ammotrypane is a synonym of Ophelina and is long unused, so recombinations either to Ophelina or other genera are necessary for its members, but Blake (2000: 158) placed Ammotrypane pallida directly into synonymy with Ophelina acuminata, the Atlantic European type species of Ophelina. This synonymy is not followed here as it is now evident there are a large number of deep water molecularly separated Ophelina species in the Pacific as shown by Wiklund et al (2019) for the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. It seems unlikely Hartman's California species is a synonym of an Atlantic Ocean species. [details]
