Taxonomy The type species of Idmonea, I. triqetra, is from the Middle Jurassic of Calvados, France. The colonies are mainly encrusting, with branches which are subtriangular in cross-section. It has some erect branches with a cross-section which is elliptical. The genus name has subsequently been used for many Recent and fossil species with erect branches with a subtriangular cross-section. These Recent species are now reassigned to Exidmonea, Idmidronea, and Pseudidmonea. It is thought to be unlikely that there are any Recent Idmonea species.  [details]
