Homonymy This combination is preoccupied by Haliclona variabilis (Dendy, 1887, as Pachychalina) as interpreted by De Laubenfels, 1950. Dendy's combination is a junior synonym of Amphimedon complanata Duch. & Mich., 1864, whereas De Laubenfels' material turned out to be assignable to Niphates erecta Duch. & Mich., 1864. Thus, the secondary homonymy is removed because De Laubenfels' combination is a junior synonym of Niphates erecta Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864.
A further senior secondary homonym of this combination is Haliclona variabilis (Thiele, 1905 as Acervochalina), accepted as Chalinula variabilis. [details]
