Identification Haeckel (1872, vol II, p. 191) suggested that Esper's specimen is not Halichondria panicea but conforms to >i>Leucandra aspera. Esper's plate is indeed unlike Halichondria panicea and he admits in his description (p. 224-225) that his speicmen is very different from Pallas' examples. In the absence of any remaining material, Haeckel's guess (which is also written in pencil on the plate (pl. XVIII) of the volume provided by the Biodiversity Heritage Library) is here adopted. [details]
