Classification Morphological cladistics show Labidodemas is firmly nested within Holothuria. If we accept our phylogeny and we downgrade Labidodemas to the subgeneric level (as a subgenus of Holothuria), amendment of the current classification is reduced to nomenclatural changes. However, given the size of Holothuria (18 subgenera, comprising some 150 species) and the possibility of deeper paraphyly, we prefer to adopt an eclectic or Darwinian classification (a classification that is based on the criteria of similarity and common descent; see also Mayr, 1982; Mayr & Bock, 2002) and, as such, retain the generic rank of the easily recognized Labidodemas (for its synapomorphies, see Massin et al., 2004). [details]

Classification In 1981, James raised the genus Labidodemas to family level, establishing the Labidodematidae. [details]
