Biology azooxanthellate [details]

Comparison Differs from Turbinolia in lacking a columella and in having fewer external thecal pits (see Cairns, 1997: 22 for discussion). [details]

Depth range 4-367 m [details]

Diagnosis Corallum ceratoid, with a rounded base and circular in cross section; GCD up to 3.5 mm; theca imperforate but deeply pitted exteriorly; costae independent and finely granular, twice as many as septa; septa hexamerally arranged in 3 cycles; one crown of 6 P2; columella rudimentary or absent. [details]

Remark This genus and family was monographed by Cairns (1997), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. Eleven species, only 3 known from the Recent (see Cairns, 1998, 2004). Filkorn (1994) reviewed the fossil species. [details]
