Knight-Jones, P. (1997). Two new species of Megalomma (Sabellidae) from Sinai and New Zealand with redescriptions of some types and a new genus. Bulletin of Marine Science. 60(2): 313-323., available online at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/contentone/umrsmas/bullmar/1997/00000060/00000002/art00013 [details]

Description [From Capa, 2007] Sabellinae with a rigid, cartilaginous branchial crown, with dorsal basal flanges provided with an anterior joint closing dorsally the branchial crown like a press stud. Radioles forming two semicircles, with basal membrane present and radiolar flanges well developed. Dorsal lips with long and tapered dorsal radiolar appendages, supported by a longitudinal skeleton. Ventral lips and ventral sacs inside branchial crown. Collar with margins separated dorsally by a wide gap, extending ventrally to form two small ventral lappets with a midventral incision. Anterior margin of ventral shield straight. Collar chaetae arranged in two oblique rows; superior row with elongate narrowly hooded chaetae and inferior row with broadly hooded chaetae; superior chaetae of rest of thoracic chaetigers, elongate narrowly hooded; inferior chaetae spine-like. Thoracic uncini with well developed breast and numerous rows of minute teeth above main fang. Companion chaetae with asymmetrical distal membrane, with proximal part covered by alternating fibres, and distal edge smooth. Abdominal neurochaetae with ‘‘C’’- shape arrangement on conical notopodia. Superior abdominal chaetae absent; inferior abdominal chaetae spine-like. Synapomorphy: Cartilaginous crown with a long base and S-shaped dorsal basal flanges. Superior abdominal chaetae absent. Remarks: Some of the features previously considered as generic diagnostic characters are specific for S. palmatum. For example, the presence of stalked terminal compound radiolar eyes is not shared by S. juani. S. juani differs from S. palmatum in the type and distribution of radiolar eyes as the former species has unpaired and irregularly arranged eyes in the distal half of the radiolar flanges, only present on some radioles, while S. palmatum has unpaired compound eyes situated on a stalk on the subdistal end of the radioles Some other characters, as the type of dorsal basal flanges with the anterior joint are shared by the two species and included in the emended diagnosis. [details]
