Etymology Not stated, uncertain. The generic name Ledon is the Greek word for 'rockrose', origin of the Latin genus name Ledum, for evergreen shrubs. Maybe the name of the polychaete genus makes reference to the "general color light green" (Webster & Benedict, 1887: 744) described for Ledon sexoculata, the type species of the genus. However this origin is uncertain.
Ledon is also geographic in origin as the name of a town in northern ancient Greece. As the preceding genus name erected by Webster & Benedict is Cossura, apparently also of geographic origin as named after the ancient Greek name for a Mediterranean island, perhaps this indicates the derivation is just as a convenient existing ancient name, without descriptive meaning, and as yet unused in taxonomy. [details]
