Synonymy Pettibone (1963) placed both Ethocles typicus and Skardaria fragmentata as Apistobranchus tullbergi. Thus the genera were synonyms of Apistobranchus. Hartman (1965) also treated the genera as synonyms but regarded the species as valid [details]Type designation Type species Ethocles typicus Webster & Benedict, 1887 by original designation, according to Art. 68.2.2. of the ICZN (1999): "If, when a nominal genus-group taxon is established without explicit designation of a type species, one originally included new nominal species [Art. 67.2] is given the species-group name typicus, -a, -um or typus, that nominal species is deemed to be the type species by original designation."
