Etymology The species is named after Michael Sars (b. Bergen, Norway, 30 August 1805 - d. Norway, 22 October 1869), Norwegian theologist, biologist, and zoologist, author of numerous marine taxa among which the name Pygophelia singularis M. Sars, 1869, a nomen nudum which Eliason considered to be originally represented by specimens of the new species. [details]

Taxonomy Eliason (1962: 274-275) suggested that the specimens collected during the Skagerak-Expedition 1933 and studied by him represented the same species than the one named but never described by M. Sars (1869: 253) as Pygophelia singularis. This species was originally collected at the Lofoten (northern Norway), at a depth of 300 fathoms, but due to the lack of a formal description, became a nomen nudum.
Ammotrypane sarsi was later considered as a junior synonym of Ophelina modesta Stöp-Bowitz, 1958 by Hansson (1998). This synonymy was accepted by Parapar et al. (2011: 100), who however transferred A. sarsi to the genus Ophelina[details]
