The specific epithet brevicristata is composed by the Latin prefix brevi-, meaning 'short', and the Latin adjective cristata, feminine of cristatum and meaning 'crested' or having a 'crest'. It seems to make reference to the length of the "medial dorsal crest" (= nuchal organs) of the species, described as not extending beyond the 7th or 8th chaetiger, being this way shorter than the one present in Laonice cirrata (M. Sars, 1851).  [details]
