Nomenclature Superfluous replacement name for the purported Spinther arcticus "Wirén", which Hartman thought was a junior homonym to S. arcticus (Sars, 1849), based on her interpretation of Graff (1888) and evidently without checking Wirén in original. She wrote "S. arcticus Wirén is a homonym and to be rejected. I propose S. wireni, new name, for the latter species." However, there was no such name created by Wirén, and Wirén's usage was a legitimate usage of Sars' Spinther arcticus name. Wirén did not create a homonym. Later authors (George & Hartmann-Schröder, 1985, Jirkov. 2001, Rouse & Pleijel, 2001) repeated Hartman's error, but Yamamoto & Imajima (1985) had correctly pointed out that Augener (1928) had provided the new name, Spinther vegae, for Spinther arcticus (Sars) sensu Wirén. Augener's proposal solved the unstability, but was hidden in text flow and overlooked by some. [details]

Type specimen Hartman's 'wireni' name is an objective junior synonym of Augener's 'vegae' name. The specimen is that described by Wirén (1883) from the Vega expedition, if it still exists [details]
