Nomenclature This species has an intricate nomenclatural history. It was first described from Wydah (Ouidah), Bénin, as Corbula striata E.A. Smith, 1872 (name preoccupied by C. striata Lamarck, 1801, an Eocene fossil), and renamed C. roumei by Dautzenberg (1910). However, Dautzenberg (1910, 1912) misapplied the name to specimens collected in Mauritania, where Corbula roumei = C. striata Smith does not exist. On these grounds, Lamy (1941: 141-142) introduced two names: Corbula laticostata for “C. roumei sensu Dautzenberg (not C. striata Smith)” and Corbula striatissima for what he believed to be the “real” C. striata Smith. The latter name is therefore an objective synonym of striata Smith, whereas Corbula striatissima has been used by Cosel & Gofas (2019) to denote the species present in Mauritania and which Dautzenberg has misidentified as "Corbula roumei[details]
