Status Mitochondrial DNA data presented by Lessios et al. (1999) suggest that the Eucidaris population of Galapagos, Isla de Coco and Clipperton Atoll form a separate clade well differentiated from E. thourasi and proposed to use the name E. galapagensis (formerly treated as subspecies of E. thouarsi) for this clade. Morphological characters distinguishing this species are the absence of a limb on the globiferous pedicellarial stalk and club shaped aboral spines. [details]
