Nomenclature This name is not so well-known than the junior synonym Tellina nitida Poli, 1795 but using the older name can hardly be avoided. It cannot be declared "nomen oblitum" being cited as the valid name of the species in the Treatise on Invertebrate Palaeontology (Keen in Moore, 1960), in Nordsieck's (1969) identification guide and in the checklist of Greek bivalves (Zenetos, 1996). It is also the nominal type species of the subgenus Peronidia Dall, 1900. Gmelin (1791) refers to Gualtieri's (1742) plate 77 figure H, which is clearly this species. [details]
